A new video from British Airways gives its customers a pilot’s eye view of landing into one of its newest destinations – Funchal, capital of Madeira, www.breakingtravelnews.com reports.

The airport – one of the most challenging landings on the airline’s worldwide network – requires special approval from the Portuguese aviation authority for pilots to fly there.

British Airways’ expert pilot training team created a bespoke plan that received approval and allowed the airline to start flying to Funchal.

Pilots flying the three times a week service from Gatwick must undergo specialist training, including flight simulation to study every aspect of the approach in detail.

The airline started flying three times a week from Gatwick to Funchal on May 11th, 2015.

In this video two of the airline’s highly trained pilots, British Airways Captains Ally Wilcox and Ian Mills, show how it’s done.

Wilcox said: “Our highest priority is always safety.”

“It’s built into everything we do, including our approved plan for flights to Funchal.”

“While we will be focused on the technical aspects of the landing procedure, our customers will be able to enjoy the great views of the Atlantic and the beautiful island of Madeira.”

The Global Sustainable Tourism Review (GSTR), by QualityCoast, has listed the Azores as one of the most sustainable green destinations in the world and the leading 2014 European green tourism destination. The Azores ranked highest with a final score of 8,9 over a total of 10 points the highest global sustainability score by GSTR.

The top of the list also include other Portuguese destinations, namely as Cascais-Estoril, Lagos and the West Region (Oeste) in mainland Portugal. QualityCoast is the largest international certification program for sustainable tourism destinations, the www.portuguese-american-journal.com reported.

The Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 initiative, launched this year  for the first time,  aims to celebrate the management efforts of the most sustainable destinations on Earth. The list is the result of open calls in the social media, followed by a selection by 30 international tourism sustainability experts.

“The Global Top 100 aims to recognize tourism destinations that have worked hard to make a difference and take sustainability seriously”, said Albert Salman program director. “Nevertheless, no destination is sustainable for the full 100%”

“This is why the Top 100 present ratings of overall destination sustainability according to the only available global assessment tool for this purpose: the Global Sustainable Tourism Review, GSTR”, he said.

“These 100 destinations stand out for making meaningful and measurable progress in their individual journeys toward greater sustainability”, said Durband CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The Azores is leading the European green tourism hit list since 2012. In 2013, QualityCoast had named the Azores the most sustainable tourism destination ahead of more than 1,000 other coastal and island locations worldwide.

Destinations are evaluated by an international team that used more than 100 indicators comprising all aspects of sustainability, including nature, environment, local identity and culture, tourism and business, local community and security.

Angra do Heroismo, on the island of Terceira, seat of the Azores Supreme Court.

The Azores administration has aimed at policies to exploring and optimizing renewable energy, in particular wind, geothermic and biomass. Currently 28% of the energy originates from renewable resources, targeted at 75% in 2018.

The “QualityCoast” awards are supported by the European Commission, the largest international independent certification program for sustainable tourism destinations. Since 2007, more than 140 destinations in 23 countries, including coastal towns, tourist resorts and islands, have been selected for a “QualityCoast” award.

Søndag 21.desember avduket Real Madrid-stjernen Cristiano Ronaldo (29) en statue av seg selv i hjembyen Funchal, hovedstaden i den autonome portugisiske regionen Madeira.

Og, den svært så potente statuen har fått svært mye oppmerksomhet, nettopp fordi den etter manges mening er litt vel avslørende hva angår fotballstjernens fysikk.

Britiske tabloider, og andre medier verden over, storkoser seg og har gått i spinn når det gjelder ordspill og morsomme overskrifter fra begivenheten. På nettet går uttalelser som “the most awful and hilarious statue ever” igjen, sammen med ord som “potent” og beskrivelser som “statue of Ronaldo erected in Madeira”.

Statuen viser Ronaldo i sin kjente bredbente positur, slik han alltid står før han skal fyre av gårde sine karakteristiske frispark. Han spiller vanligvis i tettsittende drakter, noe man også finner på den nyreiste statuen, og shortsen er av det tette og svært avslørende slaget, skriver VG Sporten.

Twitter og Facebook flommer over av kreative ordspill, så statuen av Funchals og Madeiras store sønn og største eksportartikkel har fått langt mer oppmerksomhet enn hva man kanskje hadde regnet med.

Det blir meldt i flere medier at avdukingen ble etterfulgt av til dels ukontrollert latter fra de frammøtte.

Men, hovedpersonen selv, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, som er hans full navn, ser i alle fall svært så fornøyd ut…
