The Nordic embassy in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, in a unique move, displayed sculptures created by the Rana Plaza survivors presented at the Nordic club on Monday, ahead of International Women’s Day today, reports bdnews24.com

According to the joint embassy of Sweden, Denmark and Norway –  the exhibition was aimed at showcasing the real life examples of how women, despite adversities, take control of their own lives in Bangladesh.

The Rana Plaza building collapse in 2013 killed over 1,100 people, mostly workers, and left many more injured.

Many of the women were trained under a project, “Sculptures for Survival”, supported by the Danish embassy.

Last year, a workshop was conducted for them following which they created sculptures which were later sold.

The funds raised were donated to Meena, an NGO working for the rehabilitation of these victims.

The survivors started their own income generating activity by establishing a sewing workshop with the funds.

A Bangladeshi RMG company and its Danish partners donated machines and provided technical expertise.

The Nordic embassy and its partners in the “Sculptures for Survival” project, and Shako – Women Artist Association of Bangladesh, joined hands and helped the survivors to create sculptures again.

This time the exhibition aimed to celebrate Women’s Day 2016 through emphasising the empowerment of these brave women.

Through the workshop, the women have now created new sculptures expressing powerful messages of their new empowered state.

“Each sculpture is an example of how women can step up and make a positive difference for themselves,”

Women’s empowerment is “a central pillar” in Danish development efforts, while gender equality is “fundamental” for Sweden’s development cooperation. Norway is a “strong supporter” of women’s rights in Bangladesh.

This year the joint embassy undertook different kinds of programmes to celebrate Women’s Day.

However, the embassy had to cancel the screening of an experiential documentary art film, “Dead Hands Rising”, by award winning director Khalid Mahmud Mithu. The film-maker died in Dhaka on Monday afternoon when a tree fell on him.

At the reception on Monday night, the organizers and participants observed a minute’s silence to mourn the sudden demise of the artist.

The Danish embassy in Dhaka has selected a girl student as “Shadow Ambassador” for Tuesday to promotewomen’s leadership.

EMIRATES SAYS HELLO TO YANGON AND HANOI

Emirates will launch a daily service from Dubai to Yangon, former capital of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) and Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, starting August 3, 2016.

Utilising a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a three-class configuration, this new route will strengthen Emirates’ network of destinations in Southeast Asia, offer a new flight option to passengers travelling between Hanoi and Yangon, and open up new connections for Myanmese and Vietnamese travellers to access Emirates’ global network, according to the Dubai-bases airline.

This new service will expand the airline’s network in Southeast Asia to 12 cities (which includes Cebu and Clark in the Philippines which start on March 30, 2016) in seven countries when it comes online in August.

Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is Myanmar’s commercial capital and largest city with a population of 7.2 million. With its religious and ancient sites, natural trails and picturesque beaches, Yangon welcomed 1.1 million tourists in 2014, an increase of 25 percent compared to the previous year. As the country’s main hub for trade, industry, real estate and entertainment, Yangon contributes approximately one fifth to the country’s GDP.

Hanoi is located in the Northern region of Vietnam, and as second largest city in the country, after Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) has a population of 7 million. Renowned for being a cultural hub, the city has a number of historic attractions, as well as UNESCO world heritage sites like Ha Long Bay.

Hanoi will be Emirates’ second passenger destination within Vietnam, complementing Emirates’ existing service to Ho Chi Minh City which was launched in 2012 and a cargo-only service to Hanoi in 2013.

With the daily service to Yangon and Hanoi, Emirates, in cooperation with its regional codeshare partners such as Bangkok Airways and Jetstar – now serves the major capitals and tourist attractions in Southeast Asia, providing the opportunity for tourists in these markets to build travel itineraries covering multiple cities in these destinations.

“Emirates’ first air service to Myanmar supports the country’s Tourism Master Plan to target 7.5 million tourist arrivals by 2020 and for Hanoi, the service will provide additional options for Vietnamese to travel to Dubai and Emirates’ global network of destinations, while also making it easier for overseas Vietnamese and the growing number of tourists to travel to Vietnam,” said Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning, Revenue Optimisation & Aeropolitical Affairs.

The three-class configured Boeing 777-300ER which Emirates will operate on the route offers 8 seats in First Class, 42 seats in Business Class and 310 seats in Economy Class.

Flights to Yangon and Hanoi will depart daily from Dubai as EK388 at 02:50hrs arriving at Yangon International Airport at 11:05hrs. The service will then depart from Yangon at 12:35hrs and arrive at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport at 14:50hrs. The return flight, EK389 will depart Hanoi at 22:50hrs, arriving at Yangon at 00:20hrs the next day. The service will then depart from Yangon at 01:50hrs and arrive at Dubai International Airport at 05:05hrs.

Passengers travelling on Emirates’ Boeing 777-300ER will be able to enjoy the airline’s award-winning ice system with up to 2,200 channels of on-demand entertainment to choose from.

Jakarta Tourism and Culture Department is about to cooperate with museums and business professional communities to make the Indonesian capital city’s museums more attractive to visitors, reports tempo.co

According to the department, the museums could not be a tourist destination yet. Whereas in other countries, it is the main destination.

The Department plans to cooperate with a group of professionals and businessmen as well as cultural groups that have programs to increase the potential for tourism.

“They have a program, we support it because the cost is expensive for renting Event Organizer (EO). We seemed to be the sole manager. Whereas, we need the intervention of them too,” said Head of Department Catur Laswanto.

The department also intends to intensively develop Kota Tua area, West Jakarta. The site will be made the icon of Jakarta City.

“Kota Tua has historical value and long history of Indonesian culture. It is not easy work. I have to coordinate with many parties,” he said.

The number of visitors to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh for this year’s Water Festival is less than one-fifth last year’s one million due to the cancellation of some festivities late last month by the national government, Phnom Penh Municipal spokesman Long Dimanche said yesterday, The Khmer Times reported.

The government cancelled the annual boat races that are the hallmark of the festival late last month, citing low water levels and drought in many areas of the country.

Mr. Dimanche said about 50,000 people arrived in Phnom Penh for the three-day festival on its first day Tuesday, and that the number rose to 150,000 on Wednesday. He said it increased yesterday but did not provide an estimate.

Mr. Dimanche cited two reasons for the dramatic decline in visitors. “First, some provinces are affected by drought so farmers have to tend to their rice and other crops,” he said. “Second, there is no boat racing in the capital, but it is happening in some provinces, so people are staying in their province [to celebrate],” he said, adding that concerts and other events are also being held in provincial capitals.

PHNOM PENH TO TARGET PLASTIC BAG POLLUTION

Phnom Penh

Cambodi’s capital Phnom Penh is to try to cut plastic bag use in the capital, joining other South-East Asian cities like Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and Penang, a media report said Tuesday.

UNESCO and the Ministries of the Environment and Tourism will launch the program Friday aimed at reducing the use of plastic bags and raising awareness about the dangers of littering.

The project will initially target the Riverside district, an area close to the Royal Palace and popular with both international tourists and local residents, but regularly littered in plastic bags and other refuse.

“It starts with us,” Eang Siphan, governor of the district, told the Phnom Penh Post.

“The authorities always have to educate people to divide rubbish and plastic that could affect the environment.

While Cambodia has several waste policies in places, implementing them has been a challenge. International grocery stores in Phnom Penh already charge a small fee for plastic bags, but smaller shops and kiosks often hand out multiple plastic bags with each purchase.

In 2010, Prime Minister Hun Sen blamed flooding in Phnom Penh on plastic bags, threatening fines of 20,000 riel (5 dollars) for people who litter, but little came of his plans.

It is also common to see people drop plastic wrapping on the ground immediately after use, or leave litter by the side of the road for collection by waste pickers, who take the most valuable pieces like glass and metal for resale but often leave the rest in the street.

“We are honoured to partner with Starwood Hotels and Resorts for the first Le Méridien hotel in the country,” stated Amin Ahmad, chairman of Best Holdings Limited, the organisation which owns Le Méridien Dhaka.

“Starwood is associated with crisp and professional hospitality, while Le Méridien is a brand that personlises the experience for guests enhancing on elements of local hospitality. The combination seemed right for Bangladesh where the industry is now on the cusp of evolution.”

Hanoi

Lonely Planet, the world?s popular travel guide book publisher, has listed Hanoi, capital city of Vietnam, and the second city Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the Top 10 best-value destinations for 2016.

Foreign visitors only need around 20 USD per day for food, lodging and sightseeing in the two cities, vietnamnet.vn reported.

Other “wallet-friendly” destinations include Estonia, East Africa, New Mexico state (in the USA), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Galicia (Spain), Quebec City (Canada), Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, Timor-Leste (East-Timor), and Western Australia.

Vietnam’s two metropolises were also named among the top 5 best cities for low budget vacations in 2015 earlier this year by DrPrem, a renowned travel and tourism website.

The ranking was based on average daily expenditures on food, accommodations and transportation.

The estimated daily budget stands round 17.40 USD in Hanoi where foods and drinks were deemed delicious and inexpensive while beautiful rice fields and distant mountain ranges added to the magic of the general landscape.

The travel site noted that Ho Chi Minh City can also be kind to the wallet, though it is slightly more expensive than Hanoi, raising the daily expenses to 17.79 USD.
