KINSHASA USES ROBOTS AS TRAFFIC WARDENS

Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the largest cities in Africa, with a population of well over 10m. Nonetheless, when recruiting traffic wardens, it’s looked to the ranks of the distinctly non-human: five of them are robots, designed and built by local engineers to manage the city’s most gridlocked junction, www.citymetric.com reports.

The aluminium and steel robots stand eight feet tall and look a lot like Transformers, complete with (not strictly necessary) human-style faces and voices which direct pedestrians. Their arms lift and rotate to direct traffic and pedestrians in different directions; they’re also fitted with red and green lights. Lodged inside their chests are surveillance cameras which record passing traffic.

The first two robots were installed in 2013, with a further three unveiled this year. While they’re undoubtedly fun to look at, some have accused the government of using them to distract from the city’s wider traffic problems. As Sam Sturgis notes at Citylab

This is not a legitimate solution for a city bursting at the seams with informal urbanisation. The robots are basically glorified traffic lights ? which Kinshasa needs more of in general.

We’re divided: while they may not be the best use of the city’s traffic management budget, they are very cool. And the more eye-catching they are, presuambly, the more likely people are to pay attention to them.

Artistic impression of how the new Kigali Business Centre will look like when it is completed.

The works on the project will start in August, Janviere Mporanyi, the Kigali Business Centre (KBC) managing director, has said, www.spyghana.com reports.

The project, adjacent to the Kigali Convention Centre, and opposite Kigali Heights, is located at the Kimihurura roundabout. It will add 24,000 square metres of Commercial and office space in Kigali, according to Mporanyi.

Kigali

Already 40 businesses that were tenants at KBC have relocated paving way for the two-year multi-million dollar project to commence.

Mporanyi said the works will include refurbishing the existing KBC building into a modern commercial structure of 10 levels, with a “common” base and a tower.

According to the plan seen by Business Times, the “common” base will be composed of parking and commercial space located on the ground, and an office tower of eight floors.

PRNewswire – USNewswire  press release:

The capital city of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo, is in a state of constant improvement, says Mayor Maria Coloma Edjang Bengono. Every year, it seems to be cleaner, bigger, more modern, and more orderly.

The mayor of Malabo discussed in a recent interview the capital’s continual improvement and the city government’s major accomplishments. “What you have seen today is not what you will see tomorrow because the government of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea [governing party] is constantly working to improve not only the capital city of Malabo but the country as a whole.”

Malabo. Photo: wikipedia.org

She said that the residents of Malabo now have water, power, roads, and a sewage system. The government has already designed these projects and they are already running. “Our most important goal is to make sure all these services reach all citizens. Now our goal is for every citizen to have water, power, and environment sanitation access, among other things in their homes. That’s the main goal because the most important thing for a human being is water and then later come the other things. There is potable water, and now this year’s goal is for every citizen to have it [in their homes].”

“The biggest challenge I have had as mayor has been to clean this city, because it was decaying. My biggest challenge was to educate the people on how to handle the garbage and how to make the city clean. Where there is hygiene, there is life. I feel very proud to have an increasingly clean city.”

The 6th edition of the Yaounde international open golf tournament kicked off on Sunday May 3rd with the participation of over 60 athletes drawn from 16 countries with the largest contingent coming from Nigeria, the Cameroon Tribune reported.

Yaounde

Speaking during the opening ceremony at the Yaounde golf club, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua, urged the officials of the federation to make the sport accessible to all saying golf has ceased from being an elite sport to one that can be practiced by anybody.

The president of the Cameroon golf federation, Assiga Ahanda Yves Martin said the objective this year will be to beat Nigeria which has won four of the six editions of the tournament so far. Also on hand to welcome delegates was the president of the Yaoundé golf club, Siegfried Etame Massoma who said it was an honour for the Yaounde golf club to host the tournament.

Kigali

The government of Rwanda is implementing a master plan to establish six strategic secondary cities: Muhanga and Huye in South, Rubavu and Rusizi in West, Nyagatare and Musanze from Eastern and Northern Province, the Rwanda Eye – www.rwandaeye.com website reported.

These cities will redirect employment to rural areas and avoid growing rural-urban migration. There are heavy investments in infrastructure going on, such as electricity, roads, hospitals, schools and taxi-parks. Businesses are also expanding to further towns, suppressing pressure that has increasingly been chocking Kigali.

In Muhanga town, 50 kilometers from Kigali, Sonarwa, the country’s largest insurer, is raising a-4story building. Bank of Kigali (BK), the largest local bank, has inaugurated a 4-story building too.

With medium businesses mushrooming, financial institutions are following the winds. Manufacturers and importers are opening branches in these cities too.

Burundian traders in the souther province, and Congolese traders in the north, major importers of Rwandan goods, don’t travel to Kigali anymore to access the goods or services.

In the district of Huye, for example, a predomintaly coffee growing area, has announced that its annual revenues will double up to $2.8 million from taxes after the newly constructed $6.5 million modern bus terminal.

The bus terminal dubbed “Smart park” , connecting bus routes to all parts of the country, was inaugurated on April 12, by President Paul Kagame. It is now the most modernized facility of its kind in the country.

The facility is owned by Kigali Veteran Cooperative Society (KVCS) and Loyal Trust Company owned by retired servicemen.

The facility has capacity to accommodate 200 vehicles on its three paved parking yards. It includes; 3-storied commercial complexes with 82 shops, a hotel, three modern restaurants; a petrol station; administration blocks, a car washing bay and an internet cafes.

Rwanda, being a landlocked nation, with 11 million people and one of the most densely populated countries on earth, is facing a fast growing rural-urban migration into the only capital city, Kigali, just 730 km².

The pressure has lead to high unemployment and slums widening. The plan is to divert the trend by 35% in 2020 from 17% today, says Augustin Kampayana, director of rural development.

Joan Clos, Under Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Habitat told, who visited the country in February, told KT Press that, “We have seen sudden collapse of several mega cities, it is wise to have secondary cities.”

Kampayana adds that, expansion of cities mostly near boarders with neighboring countries, will boost trade and tourism and create jobs.

National unemployment rate is 3.4%, representing 8% and 2.4% in cities and villages respectively, 200,000 jobs gap annually.

Dubai-based flydubai is increasing the frequency of flights on some of its routes in Africa for the summer schedule, operating a total of 78 flights a week to 12 points in East and North Africa, www.tradearabia.com reported.

On March 29, flydubai increased its service from five flights a week to daily to the capital of South Sudan, Juba, and three flights a week instead of two to Bujumbura, Burundi.

Zanzibar, which has seen excellent demand since the launch of the route in October 2014, will be served with four flights a week instead of two. Alexandria in Egypt will also see flydubai increase its flights from two to three a day from June.

“We are delighted to offer more flights to Africa”, said Ghaith Al Ghaith, chief executive officer of flydubai. We were the first United Arab Emirates carrier to serve Bujumbura, Juba and Zanzibar. We have seen strong demand for travel across our network in Africa, and we look forward to welcoming more passengers on board our flights”.

In line with growing trade and tourism ties between the UAE and East and North Africa, flydubai launched six routes to the region in 2014, doubling its network, and becoming the third biggest carrier of its category there and the first to offer a Business Class option to Dubai from destinations like Juba.

“Whether travelling for leisure or business between Dubai and Africa, we are confident that our passengers will continue to enjoy our Business Class, award-winning In-Flight Entertainment and the ability to connect on our growing network and Beyond”, said Sudhir Sreedharan, senior vice president Commercial.
