Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has launched flights from Abu Dhabi, the federal capital of UAE, to its second Moroccan destination with scheduled services to Rabat, reports albawada.com

The inaugural flight touched down at Rabat-Sale International Airport to a traditional water cannon salute today Sunday afternoon followed by an arrival ceremony with chief guests, Morocco’s Minister of Tourism Lahcen Haddad, and the UAE Ambassador to Morocco, Mr Al Asri Saeed Al Dhaheri.

The twice-weekly service, operated by three-class Airbus A340-500 aircraft, is the only direct commercial air link between the two capital cities. With existing daily services on the Abu Dhabi – Casablanca route, Etihad Airways has boosted its Morocco frequency to nine flights each week.

70 TUNISIA HOTELS CLOSED SINCE ATTACKS ON TOURISTS

Bardo Museum, Tunis

Unemployment in Tunisia is almost 30 percent as the country suffers from the impact of deadly militant attacks on tourists, the middleeasteye.net website reported.

At least 70 hotels have closed in Tunisia since September after two deadly attacks on foreign tourists, and more are expected to follow suit, an industry official said on Sunday.

“The situation is very sluggish,” Radhouane Ben Salah, the head the Tunisian Federation of Hotels, told private Mosaique FM radio.

With reservations at “no more than 20 percent, 70 hotels had to close since September because the lack of clients and more are expected to do the same,” he added.

Ben Salah said he expected unemployment to climb as hotel staff would be forced out of work.

Joblessness already stands at nearly 30 percent, with the number even higher among youths, and one in six Tunisians lives below the poverty line.

The country’s key tourism sector contributes to 10 percent of gross domestic product, and employs 400,000 people, directly or indirectly.

But it has been badly shaken by attacks on foreign tourists at the National Bardo Museum in the Capital city Tunis in March and a beachside massacre near the coastal city of Sousse in June.

The attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, cost the lives of 22 and 38 respectively.

Ben Salah said hotel owners and the government had agreed to look after employees who would be forced out of work.

He said the government would provide them with a 200-dinar monthly subsidy (around $102) and social security coverage for a renewable six-month period.

The number of visitors from Europe have halved since January, and international hotel chains have announced plans to close over the winter season.

This summer Tunisia’s tourism industry relied mainly on local holidaymakers or those from the region, namely from neighbouring Algeria.

Several countries evacuated their citizens from Tunisia after the beachside massacre in June and others, including Britain, have warned against travel to the North African nation.

Thirty of the 38 tourists killed in June near Sousse were British.

Tunisia’s economy has remained stagnant since the 2011 popular uprising that toppled Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The finance ministry has forecast economic growth of just 0.5 percent this year, representing half the rate for last year.

The capital of Morocco, Rabat is home to the country’s most important museum, the Royal Palace and a popular, crescent-shaped beach.

And with an urban population of over 1.2 million, it’s not surprising that the beach is bustling, busy and packed on summer days, the Weather Channel – www.weather.com website writes.

“It is incredibly crowded,” one TripAdvisor reviewer said. “Half the beach is usually taken up by soccer games.” However, some visitors still appreciate the beautiful views of the Atlantic.

“Walk up to the lighthouse and you have a breathtaking view of the ocean, yet you’re just a few steps from the medina,” said one TripAdvisor reviewer.

The world’s most crowded beaches:

1. Dameisha Bathing Beach, Shenzhen, China

2. Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

3. Plage Publique de Beau Rivage, Nice, France

4. Plage de Rabat, Morocco

5. Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

6. Brighton Beach, England

7. Haeundae Beach, Busan, South Korea

8. Beach of Durres, Albania

9. Haad Rin Nok, Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand during Full Moon Parties

10. La Perla Beach, Mar del Plata, Argentina

Khartoum
