Havana

Madrid bans “manspreading” on all public transport

Madrid’s transport authorities are clamping down on “manspreading” – the common practice that sees men take up more space than they need to by sitting with their legs wide open, the thelocal.es website reported.

The Municipal Transportation Company (EMT) announced that it will be incorporating new signage across all trains, metros and buses to dissuade “manspreaders” from adopting their annoying pose.

The icon of a red stick man sitting with his legs wide apart will appear next to signs warning against smoking, eating, putting feet on seats and dropping litter and appears with the words “Respect the space of others”

Feminist group Mujeres en Lucha launched a change.org petition, and the hashtag #MadridSinManspreading soon went viral.

“Manspreading is the practice of certain men sitting with their legs wide open on public transport, taking up other people’s space,” reads the petition. “It is not something that occurs sporadically, if you pay attention you’ll see that it is a very common practice.

“It’s not difficult to see women with their legs shut and very uncomfortable because there is a man next to them who is invading their space with his legs.”

Madrid is following in the footsteps of cities like New York, which in 2014, ran a poster campaign on its subway with the slogan “Dude, Stop the spread please”.

Mexican bartenders eye world record with massive gin and tonic pour

Hundreds of bartenders came together in Mexico City this week to beat the world record for the largest number of gin and tonics prepared simultaneously, the straitstimes.com reported.

According to a count on the night, 300 bartenders from the capital and across the country were lined up and synchronized in their preparation of the centuries-old cocktail.

The previous Guinness record reportedly stands at 250 bartenders.

Gin and tonic is made with gin and tonic water poured over ice and traditionally served in a highball cocktail glass, garnished with a slice of lime.

But the event in Mexico City, which was organized by Beefeater, followed the brand’s recipe which calls for a highball glass, ice, tonic, a lemon wheel and an orange wheel.

“There is a story that the Queen of England enjoyed a Beefeater gin and tonic. And one day, one of her royal guards was not there nor her bartender that was normally in charge of preparing the recipe. That is why she asked this guard to teach his entire battalion how to prepare the recipe for the perfect Beefeater gin and tonic,” said Maria Victoria Lara, brand manager of Beefeater.

The gin and tonic cocktail dates back to British-occupied India in the 18th century when it was used to prevent and treat malaria.

London’s tourism trade could plunge by 30% following the terrorist attack at London Bridge, the travelweekly.co.uk website reported

Experts said that although the impact after the Westminster attack had been muted, the subsequent attacks on Manchester and London Bridge would act as a material deterrent both to overseas tourists and domestic travellers.

One unnamed leisure sector chief told The Times newspaper: “London carried on doing well after Westminster, as overseas visitors had already booked and the weak pound acted as a draw, but we face a dip in business of four to five months.

“Paris tourism was down 30% and I’m expecting something similar in London.”
