Berlin

Berlin wants to attract 10,000 additional tourists from the Arabian Gulf countries this year, as the German capital city targets travellers seeking medical treatment, www.thenational.ae newspaper in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates reported.

Burkhard Kieker, the chief executive of visitBerlin, was in Abu Dhabi to meet government health officials and representatives of local private hospitals to promote the city as a medical tourism destination.

“Europe has been suffering due to the security situation for the past one year but we see a strong recovery in the number of tourists from the Gulf,” Mr Kieker said.

Last year, Berlin received 50,000 tourists from the Arabian Gulf, of which about 12,000 were medical tourists, making it the second-most popular German city after Munich. This year, Mr Kieker expects the number of tourists from the Arabian Gulf to grow by 20 per cent and the number of medical tourists to increase by about 30 per cent.

“We expect an increase in medical tourists because leading families from the region come to Berlin, it is a city where you can feel safe, it has a large Muslim population, it has great shopping and has 28 five-star hotels,” Mr Kieker said.

“There has been heavy investment in the hospitals and clinics, and an increase in Arabic-speaking staff.”

The changes in insurance policies in Abu Dhabi that make it more expensive for some Emiratis to seek treatment abroad did not impact the patient numbers to Berlin, according to Mr Kieker.

“There has been a rise in the number of self-pay patients to Berlin because they do not want to wait in a line, although the majority of the patients are still government sponsored,” he said.

Emiratis and Gulf medical tourists typically seek oncology, urology, cardiology, diabetology and trauma care treatment.

“An average Emirati patient can stay anywhere between two weeks and three months,” said Nizar Maarouf, the vice director of Vivantes International Medicine, a Berlin-based healthcare group with nine hospitals.

Berlin has 80 clinics and hospitals such as the Vivantes hospital group and Charite Berlin.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the top countries in the Arabian Gulf region to send medical tourists to Germany, including Berlin.

Etihad flies to Berlin twice daily from Abu Dhabi. Qatar Airways also connects the UAE capital to Berlin. Emirates is yet to get landing rights in Berlin.

Terrorist attacks in Europe have hurt its tourism sector. In its annual report, Emirates cited these terror attacks as among the reasons for soft demand to Europe from the region.

The Jakarta Great Sale Festival (FJGS) 2017 is expected to increase the number of tourists visiting the capital of Indoneaia, a Jakarta tourism official stated, according to the Netralnews.com website.

“The FJGS program has continued to improve every year, and it is expected that the number of tourists will also increase through this activity,” Head of Jakarta Tourism and Culture Service Catur Laswanto noted.

He remarked that Jakarta has an advantage in the form of numerous shopping centers and malls that make the capital a tourist destination.

“Unlike other regions that have natural wealth that makes them a tourist destination, Jakarta has several shopping centers, and this is a tourist attraction,” Laswanto emphasized.

The tourism official is optimistic that the FJGS 2017 will be able to compete with various shopping festivals in other Asian countries, as the products on offer are more complete and are available at lower prices.

The FJGS will be held from June 2 to July 12, 2017. This event will be followed by 81 malls or shopping centers, 40 traditional markets of the Jakarta market operator PD Pasar Jaya, and 12 hotels and retailers from shopping centers.

During the FJGS 2017, a midnight shopping program or Midnight Sale will be held every week alternately in 27 shopping centers in Jakarta. In addition to the shopping program, the FJGS 2017 will also hold social activities.

In collaboration with the Jakarta Red Cross, the FJGS committee will hold Mass Blood Donation events in 36 shopping centers in Jakarta during the FJGS 2017.

Bratislava to attract tourists with campaign featuring historical figures

Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, aims to attract tourists with a new campaign based on personalities that have historical ties with the city, such as Maria Theresa, Albert Einstein and Pope John Paul II, The Slovak Spectator – Sme website reported.

Photo credit: Bratislava Tourist Board / VisitBratislava.com

The campaign will be launched in neighbouring countries, as well as in Germany and United Kingdom, the TASR newswire learnt from the Bratislava Tourist Board executive director Alzbeta Melicharová on May 17.

Photo credit: Bratislava Tourist Board / VisitBratislava.com

“Bratislava needs strong promotion,” Melicharová said. “We were searching for the right form and decided to do so via these world-known personalities”

The campaign will be launched on social networks and at underground stations, airports and important international bus and rail hubs.

The board wants to communicate historical monuments, design and smart solutions that are important to Bratislava through people such as Albert Einstein. Maria Theresa was crowned in Bratislava 276 years ago. Pope John Paul II, who visited Bratislava a couple of times, will represent the proximity of Bratislava and its residents to the spirit of nature, coherence and sport, which unite people and create unrepeatable moments, Melicharová said, as cited by TASR.

Bratislava’s annual coronation ceremony, at which the coronations of kings and queens of the Kingdom of Hungary are re-enacted, should be boosted into more of a tourist attraction, showing that the Slovak capital is proud of its rich history.

1.2 million tourists visited Bratislava in last year, an increase of over 15 percent from the previous year, when the one million limit was exceeded for the first time.

“We want to outdo these figures,” Bratislava mayor Ivo Nesrovnal told media. “The first estimates indicate that we might succeed. This is thanks to the fact that Bratislava makes investments in cleaning, restoring monuments and reconstructing roads, so that tourists won’t come here just for a few hours but will spend a longer time here and then return.”
