Larnaca International Airport, which serves the capital Nicosia, will be renamed Glafcos Clerides Larnaca International Airport, the Cyprus Cabinet and President Nicos Anastasiades has decided, on the occasion of two years since the passing of late former Cyprus president, in-cyprus.com reported.

The decision was taken in recognition of his contribution to the country.

Glafcos Clerides (1919-2013), president of Cyprus from 1993 until 2003, was a political personality of international standing with significant contribution in the global fight against Nazism. He was Acting President of Cyprus from July to December 1974, in his capacity as Speaker of the House of Representatves, after the coup-government supported by the military junta in Greece, which overthrew the president, Archbishop Makarios, who fled the country, had resigned.

His substantial and diverse contribution to the Cyprus Republic, culminated in his pivotal role in Cyprus’ accession to the European Union.

BERN SHOPKEEPERS FIGHT TOURISM TAX

A new tourism tax to be levied on shopkeepers in the Swiss capital Bern, could tarnish the charm of the UNESCO World Heritage town instead of helping preserve its medieval character, swissinfo.ch reported.

With its colourful fountains, terracotta rooftops, cobblestoned streets and limestone arcades, Bern is a magnet for visitors and a World Cultural Heritage Site.

According to city conservationist Jean-Daniel Gross, the significance of the UNESCO label has risen since Bern received it in 1983.

“In the beginning there was almost no importance; now the label is known all over the world and its prestige has become more important every year,” Gross told swissinfo.ch.

Bern Tourism’s Nicole Schaffner agrees that the UNESCO label is probably the most important selling point for the old town of Bern. “It’s crucial for our marketing activities, especially in Asia and America.”

Bern depends on these visitors for the money they leave behind, but how can they keep them coming – and spending – without having a negative impact on the town’s Heritage.

According to Schaffner, a new tourism tax should boost the marketing budget to help Bern attract more hotel guests – who tend to spend more money in local shops and restaurants than their day-tripping colleagues.

Shopkeepers are wary of the tax. They worry that the marketing campaigns target the “wrong” type of visitors: package tourists who wander around in droves but seldom stop to buy anything before hopping on the bus to the next Swiss town.

Antony Adams runs the novelty shop CMX on Rathausgasse, which carries designer housewares, radios, toys and other fun items. According to Adams, few tourists find their way into his shop, which is parallel to the main drag.

“When you have mass tourists, they benefit almost nobody. They just march up from the bear park to the Zytglogge [clock tower] and back again, taking photographs. Even the businesses along that street benefit very little,” Adams says.

Heimatwerk, located on Kramgasse, is another example. It specialises in Swiss products like wood carvings, writing instruments, textiles and glassware. It would seem like a perfect match for foreign shoppers, but there weren’t many there when swissinfo.ch visited.

“The groups from the Zytglogge don’t really come into our shop,” manager Ruth Lundquist told swissinfo.ch. Like Adams, she’s against the tax.

“Most of the stores around here are really small. I don’t think it’s a good idea to tax us, because we already have a hard enough time just to stay open,” Lundquist said.

While major retailers and international chain stores can generally count on more solid financial foundations, the small, independent businesses are more vulnerable.

“The risk is definitely there. But I think the Bernese people are aware of it. First of all, the real core bit of UNESCO world heritage is the lower part of the old town, and that area isn’t as attractive for big labels. They would rather stay in the upper part of town,” retired University of Bern tourism professor Hansruedi Müller told swissinfo.ch.

He was the person tasked with developing the model for the tourism tax.

University of Bern researcher Jeantine Viebrock feels businesses will have to adapt to stay afloat. She took a survey – and the pulse – of the businesses in the heart of the old town.

“Owner-managed businesses face the threat of ongoing structural change, like new shopping malls, internet trade and changes in consumer behaviour. To survive they need to be innovative and adapt to the needs of consumers,” Viebrock told swissinfo.ch.

So could the old town’s current array of sidewalk cafés and antique and artisan boutiques give way to generic souvenir shops stuffed with plush bears, cheap watches and army knives”

As Viebrock points out, the correspondingly high prices for housing attract the kind of tenants who appreciate the old town as it is, including the current retail mix.

“These residents often support the charms of the lower old town by maintaining the old houses and lanes. Such “idealists” bring added value to the lower old town, also in terms of preserving the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site,” Viebrock said. They are more likely to support local businesses, too.

But Müller believes tourists do their part as well, explaining that an old town attraction like Bern’s bear park is key because it encourages tourists to walk the whole route, and many will make at least a small purchase – even if some would dispute that.

Lots of cameras but few shopping bags at Bern’s Zytglogge, a visitor hotspot. Photo: Keystone

“No, we’re not shopping. We’re just sightseeing,” said a pair of Chinese women standing in front of Bern’s Zytglogge clock tower one summer afternoon. They were among the crowd of visitors who had gathered for the hourly spectacle of the crowing cock and the dancing bears.

A teenage girl from the Netherlands shyly admitted to buying some underwear when asked what was in her little bag.

“But it’s expensive here. I don’t think we’ll buy much else,” she said; her friend agreed.

Nearby, a Canadian man was carrying a tote from a souvenir boutique. He had treated himself to a moderately-priced Swiss watch, but his wife had yet to pick up a memento from Switzerland – except for postcards and a “CH” sticker for her car.

A few other people in the clock-watching bunch were holding small parcels from sweet shops, but otherwise, hardly anybody had a shopping bag.

The exception was a family with two young children. Both parents were laden with bags – mainly clothing, but also a Lego set.

“We like shopping in Bern. There’s also a ballet shop nearby – we’ll go there next because our daughter takes dance lessons,” they said. It turns out that they were from the neighbouring canton of Solothurn, less than an hour from Bern by train.

“Lots of villages and tourist destinations have a [tax] system like [the one being proposed]. What is new is that the cities are also trying to apply this kind of system. That means not only collecting a tax from tourists when they stay in a hotel, but also from those who profit from tourism,” Müller explained.

Asked how fairness was ensured, Müller said, “The only ones taxed would be those dependent on tourism. Shops, for example, with tourism accounting for less than 5% of their turnover wouldn’t have to pay. Müller says that exempts more than half of all businesses in the city.

Geneva already has such a system in place, which has given Bern a chance to observe how that’s working. According to Müller, the tax system as it’s applied in Geneva works.

Having been approved by the Bern city government in April, the proposal will be discussed by the local city parliament. After that it could be put to a popular vote.

Ireland has opened an embassy in Jakarta proving that countrys commitment to increasing its relations with Indonesia, antaranews.com reported.

The opening of the embassy and the extension of credentials of its ambassador to the President were carried out in September 2015, according to a press statement from the foreign ministry.

Irelands foreign minister Charles Flanagan confirmed the report during a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Retno LP Marsudi on the sidelines of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting in Luxemburg on November 5.

At the meeting between the two countries foreign ministers, which was the first, foreign minister Retno had asked for Irelands support to Indonesias request for a free visa facility for its citizens to visit Schengen countries.

In response the Irish foreign minister pledged he would give positive consideration to the request.

At the meeting the Irish foreign minister also said that the Irish government would send its ambassador to represent his country at the Bali Democracy Forum to be held in Bali on December 9-10.

Minister Retno had used the 12th ASEM from November 4 to 6 to conduct bilateral meetings. She has held around 13 bilateral meetings with her counterparts from among others Ireland, the Netherland, Luxemburg, Belgium, Greece and Germany.

LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL PLANNED ABOVE DUBLIN’S ICONIC BEWLEY’S CAFE

High-profile property developer Johnny Ronan has announced plans to build four new hotels, including a stunning 70-bed boutique hotel in the iconic Bewley’s Building on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the Sunday Independent can exclusively reveal, the independent.ie reported.

The luxury hotel will complement the Bewley’s coffee house in the landmark building, which was immortalised in James Joyce’s Ulysses.

The famous Harry Clarke stained-glass windows will be a central feature in the design and the project is seen as ‘win-win’ for the cafe, ensuring the long-term viability of the business.

The announcement comes amid a flood of other major new projects, which will be developed by Ronan and his team at Ronan Group Real Estate with an estimated investment of 250 million euros. The developments are due for completion in 2017 and 2018.

In a second major venture, the prolific developer has announced a 167-bed, four-star hotel named Aquavetro. The hotel will be situated in what will soon be Dublin’s tallest building, a 22-storey waterfront tower, which Ronan is currently developing adjacent to Tara Street Dart station.

It is the latest in a long line of joint venture partnerships with CIE, which owns the site.

The building, which will also include Grade A offices on the upper floors, will be a landmark addition to Dublin’s skyline and a major boost to tourism in the city.

The timely announcement comes only two days after a report by property agents Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) on Friday which warned that Dublin needs as many as 3,000 new hotel rooms or it will continue to lose out on attracting international events to the city.

This weekend, Shane Whelan, development director for Ronan Group, told the Sunday Independent that “the focus on delivering hotels is to satisfy the strong demand generated by record tourism numbers, a recovering economy and restricted hotel capacity”.

He explained: “The last lease we signed was with Starwood for the Westin Hotel in 1996. Leases are now back in vogue as hotel operators don’t need their capital tied up in bricks and mortar.”

In a third major development, Ronan will develop The Enniskerry Park Hotel, a 200-bed hotel on a scenic 4.5-acre site in Enniskerry, neighbouring his former Ritz-Carlton Hotel, a prior Ronan Group development that has subsequently been named The Powerscourt Hotel by its current owners.

And in a fourth major project that will round off the current plan for Ronan Group Real Estate’s hotel development portfolio, Ronan will develop a site in the picturesque village of Delgany, Co Wicklow.

Ronan, who is nominated for ‘property entrepreneur of the year’ at the Irish Independent Property Excellence Awards at Dublin’s Convention Centre on Thursday night, has invited lease proposals through Knight Frank.

Meanwhile, on Friday JLL warned that Dublin hotel prices will continue to rise, if availability remains an issue. According to a report, the average price of a room is now 127 euros – an increase of nearly a fifth in just one year.

JLL senior vice-president for hotels Daniel O’Connor said that even if an extra 3,000 rooms were to be built, there would still be little slack in the system.

“Improving levels of corporate and leisure bed night demand in Dublin city are fuelling the demand for new hotel developments,” he said.

“Such is the strength of the Dublin hotel market, we estimate that average occupancy levels in the city would still remain at 80pc, even if 3,000 additional guest rooms were to come online today.”

JLL also pointed out that barely 500 hotel rooms were built in Dublin since 2010 – and only 300 are due to be added by the end of next year.

As a result, occupancy rates in the city stand at 84pc. There are about 19,000 hotel rooms in Dublin at present, but that needs to increase to 22,000.

The report has come as a bitter row broke out over who was to blame for high hotel prices during the Web Summits in Dublin over recent years. Web Summit organisers claimed that the high cost of hotels was one of the reasons why they were moving the event to Lisbon next year.

On April 1, Ronan became the most high-profile developer to exit Nama, having paid back close to 400 million euros over the past two years. US private equity group Colony Capital and international bank M&G helped to refinance close to ?300m worth of Nama debt.

Previously, Ronan had paid back close to 100 million euros through property sales, offloading Chinese interests and selling the MOP headquarters to Irish Life, an office on Burlington Road to Bernie Gallagher, and other assets. The Ronan Group recently launched a new website and branding for its business.

PARIS’ FIRST FLOATING HOTEL ON THE SEINE REVEALED AS A CONVERTED CATAMARAN WITH 54 ROOMS AND A 50 FT SWIMMING POOL

With 54 rooms, Off-Paris Seine will be housed in a converted catamaran

The hotel will be near Charles de Gaulle Bridge in the 13th arrondissement

Planners said rooms will cost between 160 euros (£115) and 450 euros (£320) a night

The hotel will be located near Charles de Gaulle Bridge along the Quai d’Austerlitz in the 13th arrondissement

Holidaymakers will soon be able to spend the night in a hotel on one of the most famous rivers in the world, www.dailymail.co.uk reportred.

Plans for a floating hotel on the River Seine in Paris were revealed this week, with officials saying it will be housed in a converted catamaran.

The three-star hotel, called Off-Paris Seine, will have 54 rooms and four suites, and there will be nothing else like it in the French capital, according to the planners.

Off-Paris Seine is scheduled to open next spring, with rooms that cost between 160 euros (£115) and 450 euros (£320) a night, a 50ft swimming pool and a terrace, The Local reported.

The hotel will be located near Charles de Gaulle Bridge along the Quai d’Austerlitz in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, which until September was home to a camp for hundreds of migrants, who slept in tents.

Nearby, visitors will be able to browse shops in the city’s main Asian district, visit the National Library of France or check out the trendy shops or restaurants at Butte-aux-Cailles.

Further out, guests can take a 20-minute walk to Notre-Dame Cathedral or Paris’ Latin Quarter.

Set on the Left Bank of the Seine, Off-Paris Hotel cost about ?11million to build, and is the brainchild of boutique hotel chain Elegancia and Citysurfing, a company that specialises in floating structures, The Local reported.

Gerard Ronzatti, the architect, told the website that guests will feel some “rocking” from the waves of passing boats, but they won’t suffer motion sickness due to the design of the hotel, which has two articulated floats.

The hotel is being built in Normandy and will be towed to its spot on the Seine in a few weeks.

While it may be the first hotel of its kind in Paris, it is not the only place where tourists can sleep on the Seine.

There are a number of private or Airbnb listings for houseboats, with rooms costing anywhere from £80 to £150 a night.

“HOUSE OF COMMONS” VED STORTINGET BLE STENGT AV BRANNVESENET. – GALSKAP, SIER KUNSTNEREN BAK PROSJEKTET, MARIANNE HESKE

Kulturetaten opplyser at 700 personer besøker huset hver time i åpningstiden i helgene.

Heske selv er opprørt over stengingen.

Marianne Heske fotografert i Gjerdeløa i Taford. Foto: videokunstarkivet.org

NOMA I SYDNEY UTSOLGT PÅ TO MINUTTER

Slik utnyttes plassen bedre.
