A new United Arab Emirates diplomatic mission in Cuba was inaugurated during an official visit to Cuba by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, the gulfnews.com reported.

The UAE and Cuba agreed to strengthen diplomatic ties and bilateral cooperation during the visit in which two agreements were signed and the new UAE Embassy in Havana was declared officially open.

“I am sure that the next few years will witness the prosperity of our ties,” Shaikh Abdullah said in a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, with whom he signed an agreement on air services between and beyond the territories of the two nations, in order to facilitate the broadening of opportunities for international air transport.

The inauguration, Shaikh Abdullah said, further cemented ties established by the two countries in March 2002.

In May 2014, the UAE and Cuba signed an open skies agreement to allow the airlines of both countries to operate in each other’s territories, as well as opening the door to new plans for flights between the two countries, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority reported.

During the meeting, Rodriguez reaffirmed his government’s support for Arab peoples in their struggle to maintain their independence and territorial integrity.

According to official sources, the two foreign ministers concurred that the opening of the UAE embassy is an important step forward in bilateral ties and will permit closer follow-up of questions of mutual interest

Shaikh Abdullah also met Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez, the First Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers. The two officials confirmed the good state of bilateral ties and the possibilities for cooperation on the economic, trade and financial fronts.

Rodrigo Malmierca, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, signed a credit agreement with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, to finance a solar energy farm that will generate 10MW of electricity.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi declared the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad open to all of his citizens for the first time in 12 years Sunday amid efforts to cut spending and appease citizens who have been protesting for basic public services, businessinsider.com / Associated Press reported.

Al-Abadi referred to the opening of the Green Zone as part of the “measures promised to our citizens and this opening that we are witnessing points to continued plans to reform – actions which we will not back down from,” a statement from his office said, adding that al-Abadi was the first to pass through the newly-opened Green Zone, or the International Zone as it is officially known.

The four square mile (10 square kilometer) compound, on the west bank of the Tigris River, was declared off-limits to the public in the wake of the 2003 U.S.-led occupation. The complex, with its high concrete walls lined with barbed wire, and heavily guarded checkpoints, is home to several palaces once belonging to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and was turned into the administrative headquarters for the U.S.-led coalition following the 2003 invasion.

Today, it contains a number of residential apartment buildings and homes, including those of many senior Iraqi government officials. A number of foreign embassies are also there, including the U.S. embassy, which, at 104 acres, is the largest and most expensive embassy in the world.

The zone has continued to be a target for bombings and rockets over the years, despite the concrete walls that surround it.

A senior Green Zone security official told The Associated Press that much of the restrictions on movement inside the Green Zone will still remain in place, particularly on streets leading to high-level government buildings and embassies, including the U.S. embassy. The official spoke anonymously because he is not authorized to brief the media.

The decision to open a passage in and out of the Green Zone comes as calls for reform continue across Baghdad to end government corruption and reckless spending.

Last month, in a rare show of unity, the Iraqi government unanimously backed a program proposed by al-Abadi to eliminate senior government posts and slash spending.

The Shopping Tourism and Economy Summit, the first European summit dedicated to the shopping tourism phenomenon, kicked off in Madrid on Monday.

The summit aims at analyzing the economic impact and the possibilities of the shopping tourism in urban development and the Spanish capital is one of the main cities where this phenomenon takes place.

Madrid is the fifth European city where non-European tourists spent the most after London, Paris, Barcelona and Istanbul, the Chinese News agency Xinhua reported.

At the summit, speakers will address topics such as how to promote shopping tourism in cities and how to boost collaboration between the public and private sector.

Among the speakers are the president of the Spanish airline Iberia, Luis Gallego, and the secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Taleb Rifai.

Spain is the third most visited country in the world after the US and France and is the second country where tourists spend more money.

Police in the Chinese capital city have for the first time covered 100 per cent of the sprawling city of over 21 million people under video surveillance and deployed more officers to improve the security facilities during the current weeklong holidays.

City police have covered every corner of the capital with a video surveillance system, the Beijing Public Security Bureau said stating that complete coverage by the video system during the National Day holiday is part of a move to tighten the capital’s security and avoid crimes in crowds.

The video surveillance system has covered 100 per cent of the capital during the holiday, the first time that the system has provided complete coverage in the city since being upgraded in 2012, a statement by the bureau said.

Additionally, the police presence has been improved in crowded places such as markets, bus stations and parks.

China is virtually shutdown for a week since October 1 to celebrate the National Day during which millions of people visit different cities putting pressure on the public security system.

The capital’s tourism committee said, a total of 2.7 million travellers visited 180 major scenic spots in the city on October 2, a 12 per cent increase year-on-year.

The measures followed number of tragedies including this year’s new year stampede at Shanghai’s beach front in which 36 people were killed and 42 others injured.

During the current holiday season, police so far had detained 23 people suspected of stealing and theft in crowded places in Beijing.

As the highest-level video surveillance system was launched in downtown Beijing, the Patrol Corps under Beijing’s Public Security Bureau also launched a video monitoring system throughout 19 sub-bureaus in districts and counties, as well as in 362 police stations, the bureau said.

As part of the effort, the number of surveillance cameras on streets across the city has increased 29 per cent year-on-year, state-run China Daily reported.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 4,300 police officers have been asked to take charge of their local video surveillance systems, the bureau said.

Based on the systems, the police solved more than 1,500 cases, up 22 per cent year-on-year, and caught 2,370 suspects, up 5 per cent year-on-year, it said.
