Breaking news from the Falkland Islands Tourist Board office in London – 14 October 2015. Tony Mason, Director of International communications has announced the Falkland Islands has won the award for the second year in a row for “Best Destination for Wildlife and Nature” in the Selling Travel Magazines, “Agents Choice Awards.”

More than 1,000 travel agents worldwide voted in this year’s awards making it the most successful awards programme for Selling Travel Magazine to date, mercopress.com reported.
Other destinations nominated in the category were Alaska, Azores, The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Botswana, and South Africa.
Mr. Mason said he would be accepting the award on behalf of everyone involved with tourism to the Falkland Islands both on the Islands and our tourism partners worldwide. A ceremony will be held in London’s Canary Wharf on Monday 2nd November at 3pm when the award will be presented.
Mr. Mason said both land-based and cruise tourism to the Falklands is important to the Islands economy and he appreciated all of the travel agents and tour operators that had made commitments and partnered with us for the coming years.
Mr. Mason also thanks the voters, who are travel agents, saying it is very important to take notice of the people who voted for the Falklands’s they are either already selling the Falklands or have shown a keen interest in selling future holidays to the islands.
He also noted that being up against such worthy contenders for the award made winning the award all the more special. He went on to invite tourism to the Falkland Islands describing the Islands as a “must see to believe” destination.
Mr. Mason extends his congratulations to everyone working in the tourism industry in the Falklands! He said this award is for you and something to be very proud of!

On 7 October 2015, Helsinki Airport became the first European airport to act as a home airport for the Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. The new aircraft boosts the future growth of the airport, www.businessrevieweurope.eu reported
“The landing of the A350 is a wonderful opportunity for us because we are the first European airport to act as a home airport for the new aircraft,” says Ville Haapasaari, Director of Helsinki Airport at Finavia.
The airport was ready for the nearly 300-seat aircraft. Some renovation has been done on the two oldest passenger bridges, but no other modifications have been necessary.
“New types of aircraft do not cause any major challenges or modification needs because we are constantly keeping good care of our airport and developing it at all times. Everything was ready, even considering the level of rescue readiness, and we are eagerly awaiting for the plane to arrive,” says Heini Noronen-Juhola, Vice President of Helsinki Airport at Finavia.
The Airbus A350 has visited Helsinki Airport once before, in summer 2014. Now, the new aircraft will be parked and connected to a passenger bridge for the first time.
This is also the largest Airbus model which will be parked at a bridge at Helsinki Vantaa.
“The parking of all aircraft must abide by the safety rules. Parking is regulated in great detail. When, for example, a new type of aircraft is connected to a passenger bridge for the first time, its docking guidance system must always be calibrated separately. This is extremely detailed work,” Noronen-Juhola says.
The Airbus A350 XWB was celebrated with the traditional water salute. The water cannons of the airport’s fire trucks drew a high arch, under which the aircraft was gliding on the taxiway.

Finavia is implementing a massive development programme at Helsinki Airport with the goal of preparing the airport to serve 20 million customers a year in 2020.
“Air traffic between Asia and Europe is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years. We need to improve all of the functions and services of Helsinki Airport in order to keep up with the competition,” says Kari Savolainen, CEO of Finavia.
The operation of the Airbus A350 XWB from Helsinki Airport will give a boost to the airport’s development as an international transit airport.
“The new aircraft is a wonderful indication that our development programme is heading in the right direction. Even though the actual expansion of the airport is only about to begin, we are already prepared to accommodate new larger aircraft,” Savolainen adds.

“This is naturally important for the Finnish airport network, but it also creates new potential for growth for the Finnish tourism network,” Savolainen reminds.
In addition to the Helsinki Airport terminal expansion project to be launched at the beginning of 2016, the aircraft parking and taxiing area will face significant modifications.
Wide-bodied aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 XWB, will have eight new bridge stands, doubling the current number of stands. As a result, there will be less need to transport passengers to planes by bus.

US gourmet magazine gives “Saveur Good Taste Award” to Berlin in New York.
So much more than currywurst and kebabs: Berlin was named the new vegetarian capital by the prestigious US Magazine “Saveur” yesterday.
The international award from the magazine for gourmands honours the culinary development of the German capital, now home to about 30 vegan and 300 vegetarian restaurants and snack stands. The winners of the Saveur Awards are chosen annually by the editors and the approximately 325,000 readers of the New York-based magazine.
The award recognises the shifts in Berlin’s dining scene. The high-end vegetarian offerings have overtaken what was once a rather meat-heavy offering in Berlin’s restaurants, the magazine’s editors wrote.
The city’s history of international immigration and its unconventionality have contributed significantly to the new variety of vegetarian and vegan offerings.
The vegetarian restaurants are also attractive those guests.
Vegetarian cuisine has arrived at the centre of Berlin’s culinary scene. For example, “Cookies Cream” is known as a trendsetting high-end vegetarian dining establishment in Berlin and was featured in the 2014 Gault Millau gourmet guide.
The vegan restaurant “Lucky Leek” has already earned an entry in the prestigious Michelin Guide. In addition, an increasing number of chefs, for example those at Nobelhart & Schmutzig restaurant, are using organic and locally grown ingredients and are putting vegetarian dishes on their menus.

St. Petersburg har de laveste gjennomsnittlige hotellprisene av alle storbyer i Europa i oktober i år, ifølge en oversikt fra hotellsøkesiden Trivago, skriver www.travelnews.no
Undersøkelsen viser at siden 2012 har den snittprisen på hotell per natt gått kraftig ned i både Moskva og St. Petersburg, i forhold til andre europeiske storbyer.
Den russiske storbyen St. Petersburg har lenge vært et populært reisemål, og velger man å besøke Russland i oktober i år kan man spare mye penger på hotellpriser.
I oktober i fjor lå den gjennomsnittlige hotellprisen i St. Peterburg på 619 kr per natt, mens den i oktober i år har gått ned til 567 kr. I 2012 lå gjennomsnittprisen på 722 kr. per natt.
Undersøkelsen viser at St. Petersburg har passert andre byer i Europa som har hatt lavere hotellpriser over lengre tid, som for eksempel Sofia i Bulgaria. Sofia har lenge hatt de laveste gjennomsnittlige hotellprisene blant Europas storbyer, men må denne måneden se seg slått av St. Petersburg.
I oktober 2012 var de gjennomsnittlige hotellprisene i den russiske hovedstaden Moskva høyere enn i både Oslo og Stockholm, og lå på 1312 kr per natt. I oktober 2015 har gjennomsnittsprisen gått ned til 907 kr, som gjør at Moskva har lavere hotellpriser enn Budapest, hvor gjennomsnittsprisen er på 926 kr.
Europas høyeste hotellpriser denne måneden finner man i Monte Carlo i Monaco. Her må besøkende ut med hele 2986 kr i gjennomsnitt per natt for et hotellrom.
Like etter følger Venezia med en hotellpris på 2466 kr i gjennomsnitt, og deretter Genève, som har en snittpris på 2457 kr per natt.

The Irish flag will soon fly proudly in the shadow of the Vatican’s St Peter’s Basilica after the acquisition of a new home for the Irish Embassy to the Holy See, The Irish Catholic – www.irishcatholic.ie reported.
The Irish Catholic understands that the Government has recently agreed a lease in a prestigious building just metres from St Peter’s Square.
The agreement means that the Irish flag will soon be flying on the iconic Via della Conciliazione, the main boulevard which leads from the city of Rome to the heart of Vatican City.
The new embassy – which is expected to take a few months to renovate – will be housed in the same building as the Embassy of Croatia to the Vatican.
It will allow Ambassador Emma Madigan to easily host senior Vatican officials for meetings and ensure that the ambassador is on-hand for important Vatican occasions. Vatican officials who spoke to The Irish Catholic this week expressed “delight” that the new embassy will be housed in such a good location.
They pointed to the fact that the gesture showed a marked improvement in goodwill from the Irish State to the Vatican after the Government’s controversial 2011 decision to downgrade relations with Rome.
The move – which then Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore claimed was to save money – drew sharp criticism from diplomats and officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade who privately admitted to being embarrassed by the Government’s reactionary approach.
The decision was reversed in January 2014 and Ms Madigan appointed as resident ambassador later that year. Ever since, officials on both sides say, there has been a willingness to draw a line under the past which saw the Vatican criticised for an apparent tardy approach to allegations of clerical abuse and Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Mr Enda Kenny criticised for a Dáil (Parliament) speech during which he misquoted Pope Benedict XVI.

The International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) has announced the 2016 edition of the world’s premier global event for golf tourism suppliers, buyers and media, will be hosted in Mallorca, the traveldailynews.com reported.
Mallorca will welcome IGTM 2016, organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions, to the Palau de Congressos in Palma, the island’s capital city, November 14-17.
