I 2008 hadde flyplassen 17,8 millioner reisende.

NORSK TURISTSMELL I LONDON

Belgium’s leading airline Brussels Airlines has announced a new route from Belfast city to Brussels.

Northern Ireland will be linked five times a week with the European Capital by a Brussels Airlines 97-seater jet, www.u.tv reported.

The new service will start on 27 March next year and flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

The launch of the Belfast service also means that Belgian aviation is back in Ireland after an absence of 15 years.

“We are delighted that we can add Ireland to our continuously growing map of European destinations,” Brussels Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Lars Redeligx said.

“On a weekly basis we will offer close to 1000 seats on the route. Belfast is an important touristic, administrative and economic destination.

“Thanks to our investment in this new service we give the region also access to our Brussels Airlines and Star Alliance network. This is not only great news for the inhabitants of the Belfast area but also for the economy and the tourism industry in Ireland.”

Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of George Best Belfast City Airport, added: “2015 has been a very successful year for Belfast City Airport with passengers numbers expected to be up 10% on last year.

“We have had our sights set on increasing connectivity with key European destinations and I am delighted that we have been able to deliver on these promises commencing both an Amsterdam and Brussels service.”

The new route has been welcomed by both business and tourism officials.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s announcement is really good news for tourism to Northern Ireland in 2016.”

“We look forward to co-operating with Brussels Airlines to maximise the promotion of this new flight to Belfast. As an island, the importance of convenient, direct, non-stop flights cannot be overstated ” they are absolutely critical to achieving growth in inbound tourism.”

Invest NI’s Chief Executive, Alastair Hamilton welcomed the announcement as it will help boost business links to Northern Ireland.

“Invest Northern Ireland is strongly committed to supporting the Northern Ireland Executive?s aim of enhancing direct air linkages between Northern Ireland and Europe as a vital contributor to economic Development,” he said.

“This new air route will be strategically important in helping to deliver this objective.”

“Our local exporters will now be positioned to take advantage of the direct connectivity it will offer to Brussels but also be able to use this service as a springboard further into Europe.”

Gerry Lennon, Chief Executive, Visit Belfast, added: “This brand new Brussels-Belfast air link will be hugely significant in our targeted efforts to promote Belfast as an attractive, modern and cosmopolitan city break destination to one of our key European markets and will be essential to assisting us in promoting our award-winning credentials as a leading, easy-to-access destination for major international conferences, meetings and events.”

“As the capital of an expanding Europe, Brussels is a major tourism market for the city and this new route will assist us greatly as we look to bring in even greater numbers of business and leisure visitors. It also strengthens our European connections further and will allow many more visitors to travel to Belfast, and to Northern Ireland, both directly and indirectly.”

Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia has been granted a loan Worth ?1.9 million (£1.4m) to install energy efficient lighting, enerylivenews.com reported.

The current street lighting network in Yerevan consists of “old, inefficient and environmentally-polluting mercury-based lights”, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The project will help introduce LED lighting, a control and monitoring system, pole replacement and renovation as well as power cable replacement.

It is expected to help cut energy usage by 64% and result in annual power cost savings.

The Municipality of Yerevan has signed an agreement with the EBRD and the Ministry of Finance of Armenia for the project.

The grant is provided by the Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P Fund), which is managed by the EBRD and gets contributions from the European Union and other donor countries.

OSLO IS FIRST CAPITAL TO DIVEST FROM FOSSIL FUELS – AIMS TO MAKE CENTRAL OSLO A CAR-FREE ZONE

www.hovedsteder.blogg.no is a Norway-based blog about the capitals of the world, with a focus on tourism and travel, the environment, diplomatic affairs, lifestyle, culture and entertainment, food and drink. See also our travel blog at www.minbestereise.blogg.no – Contact us at [email protected]

Oslo is to become the first capital city to fully divest from fossil fuels in plans released by the new coalition city government on 19 October.

Alongside the plans to divest Oslo’s £7m ($11m) pension fund, the city government is aiming to halve greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 2020 and become fossil free by 2030, the International Business Times reported.

After local elections in September saw Oslo’s city council consist of left-leaning parties for the first time in 19 years, the new coalition between the Green, Labour and Socialist Left parties presented their plans for the next four years of government.

Its plans include a pledge to not increase road capacity in the capital, build 60km of cycle lanes, invest in public transport and start to edge out cars in the city centre.

By 2019, the coalition aims to have made central Oslo a car-free zone, with tariffs operating in other areas and a subsidy to encourage people to buy electric bicycles.

Oslo follows the likes of San Francisco and Seattle in the US and Oxford in the UK as cities that have pledged to fully divest their funds from coal, oil and gas companies, though it is the first capital city in the world to do so.

Lan Marie Nguyen Berg, of the Green Party in Oslo, said: “The time for climate action is now, and the new city government will address climate change both locally and globally. The reduction in pollution will make the city even better to live in, and ensure that we take our global responsibility.”

In May, Oslo banned investments in coal. The country’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, worth around $900bn, then followed suit and plans to sell $8bn in coal investment.

The move comes a few weeks ahead of the COP21 climate talks, which will take place in Paris at the end of November. The talks hope to come up with a new global, legally binding agreement to tackle global warming.

Nguyen Berg said: “Divestment sends a strong message to the world prior to the Climate Change Conference in Paris that we need a strong agreement that will ensure that we avoid dangerous global warming.”

Prislapp: 500 millioner kroner, skriver NTB / VG.

Klokka, som stod ferdig i 1858, heter egentlig Great Bells.

Mexico has officially opened its embassy in Qatar, www.peninsulaqatar.com reported.

It hosted a reception to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Qatar and celebrate the official opening. The reception was attended by several ambassadors and diplomats.

In his opening remarks, Mexican Ambassador Francisco Niembro said Qatar and Mexico have experienced an important progress in 40 years, having had official visits and have signed many agreements.

“But we were not at the point that we wanted, we needed to be closer to really achieve the potential between the two countries,”  he said.

Last March, the foreign ministers of both countries signed in Doha a letter on opening their embassies. Since then, high-level meetings and official and business delegations visiting both countries brought a new rhythm to the relationship between the two.

Niembro said: “The unprecedented visits of Emir H E Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Mexico next month, and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to Qatar in January 2016 will set the goals for relations over the next years.”

Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Mexico were established in the 1970s. Mexico has embassies and offices in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Morocco and Algeria in the Middle East.

There are more than 400 Mexicans living in Qatar.

70 TUNISIA HOTELS CLOSED SINCE ATTACKS ON TOURISTS

Bardo Museum, Tunis

Unemployment in Tunisia is almost 30 percent as the country suffers from the impact of deadly militant attacks on tourists, the middleeasteye.net website reported.

At least 70 hotels have closed in Tunisia since September after two deadly attacks on foreign tourists, and more are expected to follow suit, an industry official said on Sunday.

“The situation is very sluggish,” Radhouane Ben Salah, the head the Tunisian Federation of Hotels, told private Mosaique FM radio.

With reservations at “no more than 20 percent, 70 hotels had to close since September because the lack of clients and more are expected to do the same,” he added.

Ben Salah said he expected unemployment to climb as hotel staff would be forced out of work.

Joblessness already stands at nearly 30 percent, with the number even higher among youths, and one in six Tunisians lives below the poverty line.

The country’s key tourism sector contributes to 10 percent of gross domestic product, and employs 400,000 people, directly or indirectly.

But it has been badly shaken by attacks on foreign tourists at the National Bardo Museum in the Capital city Tunis in March and a beachside massacre near the coastal city of Sousse in June.

The attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, cost the lives of 22 and 38 respectively.

Ben Salah said hotel owners and the government had agreed to look after employees who would be forced out of work.

He said the government would provide them with a 200-dinar monthly subsidy (around $102) and social security coverage for a renewable six-month period.

The number of visitors from Europe have halved since January, and international hotel chains have announced plans to close over the winter season.

This summer Tunisia’s tourism industry relied mainly on local holidaymakers or those from the region, namely from neighbouring Algeria.

Several countries evacuated their citizens from Tunisia after the beachside massacre in June and others, including Britain, have warned against travel to the North African nation.

Thirty of the 38 tourists killed in June near Sousse were British.

Tunisia’s economy has remained stagnant since the 2011 popular uprising that toppled Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The finance ministry has forecast economic growth of just 0.5 percent this year, representing half the rate for last year.
