Dublin

HANOI DEBUTS MUNICIPAL DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM

Hanoi

The Hanoi municipal Department of Tourism made its debut on September 21, which is expected to reinvigorate the capital city’s tourism industry.

The Department of Tourism is now separate from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and headquartered at No. 17 Dien Bien Phu street in Ba Dinh District, www.vietnamnet.vn reports.

It is tasked with preserving, tapping and developing local tourism resources, the environment and places of interest.

Another mission is to grant, amend, extend and revoke licences to establish foreign travel company representative offices while classifying hotels and tourism villages based in Hanoi.

Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao said the department will improve the State’s management of tourism while boosting the development of tourism products and promotion activities, helping to effectively tap the capital city’s tourism resources and turn the sector into a spearhead industry for Hanoi.

As a tourism magnet in northern Vietnam, Hanoi sees an annual tourist volume growth rate of over 10 percent and attracts 40 percent of the total visitors to Vietnam. It has also been the venue for a number of domestic and international tourism events.

However, local tourism activities are believed to fall short of Hanoi’s potential and advantages.

Last October, Ho Chi Minh City set up its Department of Tourism, previously part of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

In early 2015, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung also approved the foundation of a similar tourism agency in the central city of Da Nang.

“Suspended in Time” – en av mange “surrealistiske” drinker på The Langham i London. Foto: The Langham

Blant drinkene på menyen er “Suspended in Time” (Fanget i tid; bildet over).

MOSCOW MUST REMAIN CAPITAL CITY, MOST RUSSIANS TELLS POLLSTERS

Some 80 percent of Russian citizens reject the idea of moving the national capital, yet only 13 percent admitted that they?d prefer their children to choose Moscow as their place of residence, Russia Today reports.

According to research released by the state-owned agency VTSIOM on Friday, only 5 percent of Russians would definitely support the transition of the capital from Moscow to some other city. A further 7 percent answered that they were not opposed to the idea, while 8 percent said they were undecided.

The remainder of respondents ? 80 percent ? said they?d definitely prefer Moscow to remain the capital of the Russian Federation.

The idea to move the capital from Moscow was more popular among residents of the city itself along with denizens of Russia’s second-largest city and former capital St. Petersburg. Among people with strong political allegiances the idea was more popular with supporters of the Communist Party and the non-parliamentary opposition.

At the same time, only 13 percent of Russians said they would prefer their children to live in Moscow permanently. Some 11 percent said St. Petersburg was the best city for their offspring and 23 percent answered that if they could choose the place of residence for their children it would be some small Russian town. Twelve percent liked villages best and another 12 percent said that if they could choose they would send their children abroad.

VTSIOM’s director for communications, Aleksey Firsov, commented on the poll results by saying that Russians have started to associate big cities with stress, high cost of living and bad environment. At the same time he noted that the plan to move the Russian capital from Moscow which is voiced from time to time by various politicians apparently has very weak public support and that the idea of antagonism between provincial and capital residents was an exaggeration.

The general director of the agency, Valery Fyodorov, told Kommersant newspaper that the majority of Russians think of Moscow as a “sacred capital” and not as of a place that capitalizes on the poverty and misfortune of other places.

The plan to move the capital from Moscow to somewhere in the center of Russian Federation has been voiced, among others, by the current Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu (who comes from the Siberian region of Tyva) and radical nationalist politician and writer Eduard Limonov (who grew up in the Ukrainian industrial city of Kharkov).

The current Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin has repeatedly opposed the idea and said that losing “Capital” status would cause a real economic disaster both in the City of Moscow and the Moscow Region.

REYKJAVIK VOWS ISRAELI PRODUCT BOYCOTT “UNTIL OCCUPATION ENDS”

Reykjavik’s city council has approved a proposal for a boycott of Israeli-made goods due to the country’s “apartheid policy.” Israel’s Foreign Ministry in response: “A volcano of hatred is erupting from Reykjavik.”

Reykjavik’s council approved a motion Tuesday to halt the city’s purchase of Israeli products “as long as the occupation of Palestinian territories continues.” The motion was put forward by Björk Vilhelmsdóttir, councilwoman for the Social Democratic Alliance. She is retiring from politics, and putting this motion forward was her last major act in the city council, Deutsche Welle reports.

A member of the governing coalition at the city hall, Sóley Tómasdóttir, told Icelandic public broadcaster RUV that the boycott is a symbolic decision, intended to pressure Israel to stop the occupation. She also said the city might follow it up with boycotts of other countries that violate human rights.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Emanuel Nachson said in response that “A volcano of hatred is erupting in Reykjavik’s city council building. There is no reason or justification for this move, besides hate itself, which is being heard in the form of calls for a boycott against Israel, the Jewish state. We hope that someone in Iceland will wake up and stop this blindness and one-sidedness which is aimed against the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel.”

Some Israelis were taking to social media to comment on the decision, however most of them didn’t take it seriously and were mainly mocking the “meaningless” move, saying they will ban cod fish in return.

New Zealand will open an embassy in Bogota, Colombia, next year, to reflect the growing trade relations between the two countries, Radio New Zealand International reports.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully said Colombia was an increasingly important partner for New Zealand, and had one of the strongest performing economies in South America.

With a population of more than 46 million and solid growth, there were numerous opportunities in Colombia for New Zealand businesses, particularly in areas such as education and investment, he said.

The embassy will be New Zealand’s fifth post in Latin America.

Brick Lane, London.
