If Kampala Capital City Authority Executive Director, Jennifer Musisi’s plans are not derailed, Uganda’s capital city could get a passenger train service as early as end of March. The passenger commuter train service is being implemented by the Rift Valley Railways (RVR); a private-sector consortium which runs the Kenya-Uganda Railway, the www.independent.co.ug website reported.

In early March, Musisi was in the Kenyan capital Nairobi for meetings with officials of RVR.

Musisi told journalists that the commuter train service is part of an integrated transport master plan to reduce pressure on roads and highways leading into Kampala city. “Uganda has waited a long time for this experience,” she reportedly said.

Earlier on Feb.5, Musisi had led officials from KCCA, the Ministry of Finance, RVR, and journalists on a test run of the route – a 12km stretch from the main railway station in the City Business District to Namanve; an outlying derelict former rail shunting station in an emerging Industrial Park to the east of the city.

The Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Tourism will conduct service quality inspections in Baku hotels, the abc.az website reported.

According to the Ministry, service quality inspections on the threshold of the Baku European Games will be conducted in April.

“Such inspections aim to check if the services meet the state standards, whether the shortcomings were corrected and services improved”, the Ministry says.

The Ministry also informs that last inspections in Baku hotels were conducted in October 2014.

Problemene for den stadig mer pressede turistindustrien i Egypt ser ikke ut til å ha noen ende. På grunn av politisk uro og terrorfrykt ligger turistnæringen i landet for en stor del nede – og nå skjerper landets myndigheter visumreglene, skriver VG.

Visum ved ankomst til Egypt faller nå bort. Alle må nå søke om visum i hjemlandet før de reiser til Egypt.

Terrortrusselen, spesielt de fra de islamistiske gruppene i Sinai-regionen, gjør at Egypts sikkerhetsmyndigheter ønsker bedre kontroll med hvem som kommer inn i landet.

Gruppereisende går fri fra visumplikten, det samme gjelder cruiseturistene, ifølge Egypts utenriksdepartement.

Tall fra det nederlandske flyselskapet KLM viser at selv om de tradisjonelle feriereisemålene fortsatt er populære, kan man se en markant økning i bestillinger på mer eksotiske langdistanseruter, skriver www.travelnews.no

-Tall fra sommersesongen 2014 og foreløpige reservasjoner for 2015-sesongen viser at New York er den mest populære destinasjonen utenfor Europa, men nordmenn reiser stadig oftere til mer eksotiske destinasjoner som Havanna, Lima eller Manila, sier Carina Bergqvist, pressetalsperson i KLM.

I Karibia er det Havanna på Cuba som er den desidert mest populære destinasjonen. Andre steder vi reiser til i følge KLM er Punta Cana i Den dominikanske republikk, Aruba og St. Martin.

I Sør-Amerika er det Lima, hovedstaden i Peru, som seiler opp som ny favoritt og her er det forhåndsolgt flere seter enn på strekningen Oslo-Rio de Janeiro, som hittil har vært favoritten blant nordmenn.

Bangkok er ikke overraskende ferievinneren i Asia, men destinasjoner som Filippinene og Japan øker stadig.

I Afrika er Sør-Afrika og Nairobi mest populært, men også Tanzania (inkludert Zanzibar og Kilimanjaro) topper listen.

-Vi ser tydelig at nordmenn har begynt å reise til mer eksotiske destinasjoner enn før. Spesielt Sør-Amerika og Karibia lokker, men vi ser også at Øst-Afrika øker i popularitet. KLM er en del av et stort flynettverk og har mer enn 1000 spennende destinasjoner vi kan fly nordmenn til fra syv lufthavner i Norge, sier Carina Bergqvist.

Norwegian var nær ved å sesongstenge ruten fra Oslo til Dubai i De forente arabiske emirater etter den 11 dager lange streiken tidligere denne måneden. Dette på grunn av mange kanselleringer på ruten, skriver VG.

Fine ting du bør ha på hytta

Flyselskapet var i full gang med å booke om passasjerene sine til andre selskaper som flyr Oslo-Dubai, da ledelsen i Norwegian ombestemte seg.

-Vi besluttet å gjenoppta flygningene til Dubai fordi vi ikke fant gode nok alternativer til dem som hadde kjøpt billett hos oss, sier Norwegian-talsmann Lasse Sandaker-Nielsen.

Selskapet flyr til Dubai ut april, før ruten tar sommerpause.

Dubai er ett av sju emirater i De forente arabiske emirater, der Abu Dhabi er forbundshovedstad.

The 36th Ukrainian Fashion Week, which started on March 18, features some 62 Ukrainian designers who are presenting their autumn-winter 2015/2016 Collections, the Kyiivpost.com reported.

Ukrainian Fashion Week will be held for eight days instead of the usual five.

The head of the organizing committee of the Fashion Week, Iryna Danylevska, says that this year Ukrainian designers depict war in their fashion collections, going with the slogan “Next Step”.

“We have a feeling that we are doing the next step in the life of our country, in the lives of each of us”, Danylevska says. “In such a way Ukrainian designers make us think about the future and make us believe in our country”.

Besides a fashion mission, the current Fashion Week has a strong social background.

Near the entrance to the venue, visitors are welcomed with the art project “Ukraine Inspired” – a big map of Ukraine decorated with the most important quotes of famous Ukrainian writers and works of Ukrainian fashion illustrators.

Vytoky (Origins), an art project dedicated to the traditions of Ukrainian national costume, is another interesting fashion event. This year’s Ukrainian Fashion Week displays Ukrainian embroidered costumes from private collections and from Ivan Honchar Museum.

The first day of Ukrainian Fashion Week was opened with a show by Ukrainian designer Liliya Pustovit.

Other designers who demonstrated their collections include Viktoriya Hres, Annette Gorts, Olena Burenina, Viktor Anisimov, Olena Serebrova and Yuliya Aysina.

This year fashion lovers can enjoy 45 fashion shows, 14 special projects and seven special Open Fashion events.

With the lofty ambition of becoming the first country in the world to operate fossil-free by 2020, Aruba has been named one of five winners in National Geographic’s inaugural World Legacy Awards, a competition aimed at spotlighting the trailblazers driving positive change in the travel industry.

Launched for the first time this year, the World Legacy Awards received 150 entries from hotels, ecolodges and organizations from 56 countries vying for one of five titles: Earth Changer, Destination Leadership, Sense of Place, Conserving the Natural World, Engaging Communities.

In the category of Destination Leadership, which recognizes destinations that demonstrate environmental best practices, the Caribbean island of Aruba edged out finalists Delaware North Yosemite in the US and Val d’Aran in Spain.

To meet their aggressive targets, the government has invested heavily in renewable energy, building the largest solar car park in the region, for instance, installing 14 000 solar panels, and a waste-to-energy plant that turns trash into renewable power, points out NatGeo.

The plan also calls for the construction of the world’s first trolley system using hydrogen fuel cell technology powered by the sun and wind.

“Tourism is based on selling cultural and natural heritage experiences, whether that is a trip to see Angkor Wat or a wildlife safari in Africa”, said editor-at-large Costas Christ in a statement.

“With more than a billion international tourists last year, and the number growing, we must make sure that tourism is an opportunity and not a threat to the people and places travellers want to visit. The World Legacy Awards are about helping to lead the way forward.”

A panel of 18 judges decided on the winners. On-site inspections evaluating sustainable tourism practices were also part of the judging process.

Radisson Blu Hotel will be opened in Yerevan in early 2016 after reorganization of Golden Palace hotel, the Armenian ARKA News agency reported,

Arild Hovland, Senior Business Development Vice President at Carlson Rezidor, and Karen Janoyan, Golden Palace CEO, signed Thursday an appropriate contract in the presence of Armenian Economy Minister Karen Chshmarityan and Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan.

«Provision of Carlson Rezidor hotel services is a landmark event for Armenia,» Chshmarityan said. «It is very significant for the country’s tourist industry, since it stresses the importance of its role at international tourism market and shows that Armenia is strengthening its position on the world tourism map.»

In his words, Carlson Rezidor Group intends to make investments in various areas and ensure new services and visits of new tourists to Armenia.

“Armenia’s government will keep taking steps in this direction and we will continue supporting all the initiatives of this kind,» Chshmarityan said. «The most favorable environment will be created for doing business in this area and investing in it.»

Hovland, on his side, said that the company is inspired with an opportunity to establish a business in Armenia and stressed that Rezidor and Raddison Blu are quite prestigious brands in Russia, CIS and Baltic countries.

There are 54 hotels under these brands in the region. He said that this is a very good marketing step for Armenia. In his words, Carlson Rezidor is interested in business tourists, who constitute an important segment of hotel tourism, but Armenia also has a rich history and many historic and cultural sites.

Besides, he said, Armenia has communities worldwide, which are one of the targeted segments as well, and since Rezidor has hotels in some European countries, this gives room for working in this direction.

Karen Janoyan, CEO of Golden Palace Hotel, said that after reorganization the number of rooms will increase from present 66 to 140, and the hotel will be ready to host guests in the first quarter of 2016.

Tirsdag denne uken gikk det første regulære charterflyet fra Havanna til New York, i regi av reisebyrået Cuba Travel Services, som er basert i California.

Med dette er det slutt på et ti år langt opphold i lufttrafikken mellom de to byene, skriver www.travelnews.no

Reisebyrået opplyser at de foreløpig starter opp med ett fly i uken. Flytiden mellom Havanna og New York er på rundt tre timer og 40 minutter.
