A Strategy For Valletta“, which is a holistic plan aimed at reanimating the capital city of Malta both in terms of tourism and businesses, as well as, as a residential area, was launched by the government yesterday, Malta Independent Online reports.

The document is now open for public consultation for six weeks and is accessible both on the website of the Planning Authority and that of the Ministry for Social Dialogue.

The strategy started as a master plan for Valletta ahead of Valletta being the European Capital of Culture in 2018, but it transpired with time that V18 will be a springboard to a legacy which should fully reflect the rich Maltese culture and history. The Maltese government said that the last thing they want is for Valletta to turn into a museum.

One major focus, apart from regeneration of the entire city, is an “urban regeneration” process aimed squarely at attracting new potential residents. Studies show that the current population of Valletta is dwindling to a few thousands, most of whom are over 60. In fact, this ageing population has given rise to a need for a public transport system within the city itself.
